The Brain

Imagem Cérebro

It is no exaggeration to say that the Brain is the most important organ in the human body. It regulates and coordinates our actions, movements, thoughts and emotions.

The three main themes of this exhibition are "What is our brain like", "The Brain thinks" and "The Brain moves the body". Here we can find out the length of our nerve cells or even enter a giant head that is a true "Brain Cinema".

There are around 70 activities to try out to get to know the functions, components and potential of our own Brain.

Try to climb an impossible stairway, touch a real brain, race around with a nerve cell message, play music with the brain waves, learn how our biological clock works, try out different tasks that are easier for men or for women, use your brain energy to control pain or do personality and intelligence tests.

This 56 page notebook is colourful and great fun. You can buy it at the Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva bookshop for €7.48.

The exhibition "The Brain" was on show from 05-05-2000 to 26-01-2001.

Beneath the Skin

Imagem Debaixo da Pele

The human body is the last frontier - the frontier of knowledge, the boundary of wisdom. Man has been able to learn more about himself and his body through technology. Only by "tunnelling beneath the skin" were we able to reveal the secrets that lie beyond the reach of the human eye. This is how we developed technologies and tools that help us on this virtual "journey".

The discovery of the human body began with the dissection of corpses. Nowadays, technological advances provide increasingly accurate diagnoses using non-invasive techniques, without causing pain to the patient. The technological barrier was overcome with the invention of the X-ray.

The introduction of computerised diagnostic techniques led to advances in Imaging techniques which can take cross-section images from any angle of the body.

This Deutsches Museum exhibition demonstrates many techniques for exploring the human body, from X-ray and Ultrasound to Nuclear Medicine. It is these that will enable us to break down the final barrier.
