Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone and
Arthropods are those that have a chitinous exoskeleton, i.e.
an outer skeleton made of chitin.
Their ability to adapt to different environments, competitive
advantages over other species, an exceptional reproductive
capacity and perfect social organisation - in the case of
bees and ants - have made this animal group one of the most
successful, with over 800,000 species.
The 12 giant models in this exhibition help us to discover
why insects are different from spiders and other invertebrates.
Experience how ants feel moving through the tunnels in the
anthill. How the butterfly was once an egg, a caterpillar
and a chrysalis. See through a fly's eyes. Hear how insects
sing. Visit a beehive. Learn about the invertebrates that
live in soil, underwater and even in Man.
What is the relationship between insects and plants? How
does an insect smell? What lives in our kitchen cupboards?
Watch short films in a small comfortable snail-shaped auditorium.
Younger children get the Creepy-Crawly Passport and have to
find the stamps to fill it in. To do this, they have to solve
the twelve puzzles - all the answers can be found in the exhibition.
The exhibition "Creepy-crawlies" was on show from
16-03-2001 to 31-12-2001.
